Master All ACT Sections

Three required sections make up your Composite score. Science and Writing are now optional and sit outside it.

English

50 questions, 35 minutes

  • • Grammar & Usage
  • • Sentence Structure
  • • Rhetorical Skills
  • • Writing Strategy

Math

45 questions, 50 minutes

  • • Pre-Algebra & Elementary Algebra
  • • Intermediate Algebra
  • • Coordinate & Plane Geometry
  • • Trigonometry

Reading

36 questions, 40 minutes

  • • Literary Narrative
  • • Social Studies
  • • Humanities
  • • Natural Sciences

Science (Optional)

40 questions, 40 minutes

No longer part of the Composite. Still worth taking for STEM-leaning applications, and some programs ask for it — we help you decide based on your target schools.

Writing (Optional)

1 essay, 40 minutes

Also outside the Composite. Some colleges require or accept an ACT writing score, so check each school before you decide to skip it.

Scoring

Your Composite is the average of English, Math and Reading, each scored 1–36. The three required sections run 2 hours 5 minutes in total. Each section also includes a small number of unscored field-test questions, which is why the question counts run slightly above what is scored.
